Recipe Tips
If you want to give this recipe a slightly more sophisticated touch, sub in either Gouda or Gruyère for the Cheddar cheese.
If you’ve never tried your hand at making your own homemade cheese sauce for mac and cheese, you’re missing out! Now is your chance with this Gluten Free version made with ready to serve naturally flavored rice.
The difference between this dish and the traditional version is that the rice is added into the butter along with the cream cheese and milk to cook down. Once that is sufficiently warm, added in the shredded cheese and stir with a whisk until it is rich and creamy. Simple and delicious.
For an added crunchy layer on top, heat butter and breadcrumbs together and sprinkle over the top of your dish. In an oven-safe dish, bake on broil until the breadcrumbs are golden on top.
Use it as a side dish for your next meal or get together. Bring the flavors of your childhood back and toss in sliced hot dogs, Italian sausage or chopped bacon.
